Animals are the flavour of the season!

Veg, non-veg, dead, alive, protected, killed, eaten.

Slip-cast, hand-built, thrown&altered, soda-fired.

Prior to making works for the Animal Planet show, I was sitting in my mother's living room and realised I was surrounded by ceramic animals... many, many touristy clay figurines collected by my mom over decades of international travel. Not wanting most of this to be a part of my inheritance, I decided to carry some of these to my studio in auroville and use them in my tableaux for the show.

Recycle, reuse, rejuvenate.

Soon I am the cow-whisperer, listening to tales these objects are confiding in me ...and building my sets around them. There is always the scare that these may have been initially made of low temperature clays and may slump in my high temperature firings.... but thenagain, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

In addition to these tableaux, I will also be showing my "Circle of Life" series.... tabletop plinths and wall panels populated by swirls of (what I call) my "horny pigs", ...where the cow is trying to masquerade as a pig with horns. Call it self-preservation, call it gau-raksha, call it bovine vigilantism, call it pantomime.

These tableaux are best viewed with Sir Elton crooning his number in the background.....

"In the circle of life, it's the wheel of fortune; it's the leap of faith, it's the band of hope, till we find our place, on the path unwinding,
In the circle, the circle of life."
